Causes and Impact of Labour Migration: A Case Study of Punjab Agriculture AgEcon
Kaur, Baljinder; Singh, J.M.; Garg, B.R.; Singh, Jasdev; Singh, Satwinder.
In Punjab, the influx of migrant labour particularly in agriculture sector started with the green revolution and picked up subsequently. Due to monoculture in the cropping pattern, the state has become largely dependent on migrant labourers for various agricultural operations. The influx of seasonal as well as permanent labour from outside has led to various socio-economic problems in Punjab. In the wake of this, the present study was purposively conducted in the Central Zone of Punjab for the year 2011 to find the causes and impact of labour in-migration in Punjab. A total of 105 respondents belonging to the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Nepal constituted the sample frame. The results have revealed that better income and...

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF LABOR OUT MIGRATION AND REMITTANCES ON INCOME AND RICE PRODUCTIVITY IN THE PHILIPPINES, THAILAND AND VIETNAM AgEcon
Paris, Thelma R.; Rola-Rubzen, Maria Fay; Luis, Joyce; Thi Ngoc Chi, Truong; Wongsanum, Chaicharn; Villanueva, Donald.
Out migration from rural areas is increasingly becoming a strategy to get out of poverty. While rice–based agriculture remains to be the backbone in Southeast Asia, majority of the farming households particularly those who produce rice under rainfed conditions remain poor and insecure. This paper examines the relationship between migration and other socio-economic factors on household income using data from 1,874 rice sample farming households in Vietnam (north and south), Thailand (northeast) and Philippines (Luzon island). In the Philippines, remittances contribute about 60 per cent of household income of recipient families. In Thailand and Vietnam, these constitute about 40 per cent of total household income. International migration is most prevalent in...

Espinosa Zamorano, Edy Gregorio.

Internal Mobility and International Migration in Albania AgEcon
Carletto, Calogero; Davis, Benjamin; Stampini, Marco; Trento, Stefano; Zezza, Alberto.
Using evidence from two recent data sources – the 2002 Albania Living Standards Measurement Survey (LSMS) and the 2001 Population Census of Albania – the paper documents the phenomena of internal and external migration in Albania, a country that in the past decade has experienced dramatic changes as it makes its transition to a more open market economy. Albania is a country on the move, both internally and internationally. This mobility plays a key role in household-level strategies to cope with the economic hardship of transition and it is perhaps the single most important political, social, and economic phenomenon in post-communist Albania. The order of magnitude of the observed flows is astonishing. Almost one half of all Albanian households have had...

Migración e inversión de remesas en el sector rural del estado de Durango Colegio de Postgraduados
Esparza Vela, Mario Edgar.

Migration and Rural Development AgEcon
Lucas, Robert E.B..
The paper summarizes the key routes through which internal and international migration impact rural development and some of the evidence pertaining to these effects in low income countries. It concludes that, although the study of migration impacts on rural economies has come a long way from the early dual theories of development, some of the potentially more important aspects remain to be investigated systematically.

Migration of Husbands, Remittances and Agricultural Production: Impacts when Wives Head Households in Rural Kenya AgEcon
Kiriti, Tabitha; Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper uses data collected from migrant's wives in the Nyeri district of Kenya. The main objective is to determine whether migration and remittances contribute to the development of agriculture. Our results suggest that most migrants are pushed out of rural areas, belong to the group of low-paid workers in urban areas, send little and irregular remittances to their wives back in rural areas and that these remittances are mainly used for consumption purposes and do not contribute to any significant development in agriculture. Our results also indicate that altruism or social obligation might be the main reason for migrants sending remittances to their rural wives.

Patterns and Determinants of International Migration in Northern Albania AgEcon
Meyer, Wiebke; Mollers, Judith; Buchenrieder, Gertrud.
The European Union (EU) is the main source of remittances world wide and Albania, struck by abject poverty, is Europe’s number one country sending out migrants. Albania’s economy as well as its households’ welfare strongly depend on remittances. Consequently, the topic of migration is cutting-edge for EU and Albanian policy makers. Thus, up-to-date information is decisive for taking effective policy measures. This poster paper aims at making a fruitful contribution to understanding the varied context of migration in Albania. It presents recent data on socio-economic characteristics of households with absent family members. A binary logistic regression is employed to identify determinants of participation in international migration in Northern Albania.

Remittances and economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean: The Impact of the human capital development AgEcon
Garcia-Fuentes, Pablo A.; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
Remittances are one source of external financing for developing countries that have been increasing in both size and importance as of late. However, the issue about the impact on economic growth from remittances is still opened for discussion. This paper adds to this discussion by investigating the impact of remittances on growth through human capital using a panel data analysis for a sample of 14 Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries during the period 1975-2000. The results indicate that remittances have a positive impact on economic growth in the representative countries from the LAC region; however, the realization of this impact holds only when the remittance receiving country has a minimum threshold of human capital stock.

Rice and Remittances: The Impact of Labour Migration on Rice Intensification in Southern Laos AgEcon
Manivong, Vongpaphane; Cramb, Rob A.; Newby, Jonathan C..
Despite being a low‐income, agriculture‐based country with a subsistence‐orientation, Laos is in the early stages of a major economic transformation whereby rural households have been experiencing rapid change in their farming and livelihood systems. Some households have engaged in what the World Bank classifies as market‐oriented farming while other households have adopted labour‐oriented or migration‐oriented livelihood strategies. This paper explores how rural households in six villages in the lowlands of Champasak Province in southern Laos make a living. These villages vary in their access to irrigation and to markets. Nevertheless, in all villages, long‐term migration of younger household members to neighbouring Thailand has come to play a large role...

Shocks, Groups, and Networks in Bukidnon, Philippines AgEcon
Quisumbing, Agnes R.; McNiven, Scott; Godquin, Marie.
This study examines the role of groups and networks in helping poor Filipinos manage their exposure to risks and cope with shocks. It brings together two strands of literature that examine how social capital affects economic variables and investigate the processes by which social capital formation, participation in networks and groups, and trusting behavior comes about. Using a longitudinal study from a province in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, the authors find that households belong to a number of formal and informal groups and networks, but participation differs according to household characteristics. Households belonging to the lower asset quartiles belong to fewer groups, and households with more human and physical capital have larger social...
